Take part in the #HomePro challenge

Many of us are stuck at home, but fear not. We are all creative beings, capable of making the most of any situation. To celebrate our homebound selves, GoPro is launching the #HomePro Challenge. We want to see what creative radness, inventiveness or … err … weirdness you are getting up to at home.

Every day, from March 23 through April 30, we will pick 5 of our favorite content submissions and award the creator their choice of a HERO8 Black or MAX camera + 5 years of GoPro PLUS, free!

Could self-isolation find the Dickens in you?

Founded by the great Charles Dickens, the Journalists’ Charity has launched a competition to discover the kind of people living today who might have captured the writer’s imagination and would be his great inspirational characters of the 21st Century.

In just 300 words – with Dickens’s descriptive flamboyance – can you pen a portrait of the 21st century character you think would have deserved his attention?

Entries must be received by the charity by 5pm on June 9th 2020.

Learn How to Tell Stories Through the Khan Academy

Is story telling a dying art?

Well it need not be.  Now’s the time to be telling your story as we have a variety of methods and media in order for us to convey it.  However, if you don’t know where to start why not do a free course on the Khan Academy.  Pixar in a Box: The Art of Story Telling is a free course along with activities that you can do.  While you’re at it, why not check out their other courses in a wide variety of subjects – and contrary to belief, it’s not just for students of a young age.

This site is for everyone!

Make Some Vegan Meals On a Budget

I’m not a vegan but I know many people who are.  However, this doesn’t stop me from watching this superbly produced YouTube channel called Pick Up Limes where they share delicious recipes that are not only pretty to look at but they’re healthy for you.  Really, every video I put here is as good as the next.  Check out how you can make some vegan meals for under 2 Euros and once you’ve done that, make sure you check out their other videos.

Learn Instagram Tips and Hacks

There’s a lot to learn with Instagram and admittedly, it’s not an app that I have taken much time to explore.  However, Hayls World YouTube channel has a great range of short videos that show you how to get the best out of your phone and apps such as Instagram and WhatsApp with an emphasis on Samsung phones.

Learn Macrame

Macrame, the art of rope and knots is having a bit of a resurgence of late (thanks to Pinterest).  Now’s the perfect time to learn and use up any rope you have lying around or even cut up old tee-shirts into long strips so that you have materials to play with.  Read more on Macrame: How to Get Started and the 7 Knots You Need to Know.

Why not start with a 5 minute macrame planter?

Build Your Own Personal Learning Plan for Isolation Activities

Make time for learning every day and now’s the time to do it – no matter how short it is.  Focus on something you would have loved to have learned which will help you in future when things “return to normal”.

Here’s a plan to get you started.

However, the trick here is to NOT OVERWHELM yourself especially if you are co-ordinating and planning activities around a routine with family.

Take it slow.

Think of something you would like to learn then break it apart in pieces and see how you can fit it in your day around work, family and health (which come first).

These “learning” times are a brain break from worry.
