From around the Web

Machine Learning will redesign, not replace, work  Tom Relihan, MIT Management Sloan School, 26 June 2018

““Despite what Hollywood is saying, we’re very far from artificial general intelligence. That’s AI that can just do everything a human can,” Brynjolfsson, who teaches an online MIT Sloan Executive Education course on digital business strategy, said. “We don’t have anything close to that. We won’t for decades, unless there’s some amazing breakthrough.” What we do have are powerful narrow AI systems, Brynjolfsson said, which are capable of solving certain, specific problems at human or super-human levels of accuracy, typically using deep neural networks. Those technologies are adept at tasks involving predictive analytics, speech and image recognition, and natural language processing, among others.”

How to make the most of serendipity at work  Christian Busch, World Economic Forum, 5 July 2018

“Serendipity tends to happen when we open our eyes to the unexpected. At its best, this means seeing bridges where others see holes. In our day-to-day lives, we often fail to capture serendipitous moments … However, our research shows that there are tangible ways to develop the conditions for serendipity and to ensure that these potentially transformational coincidences are grasped with both hands.”

Modern L&D: More than organising and managing (e-)training  Jane Hart, 3 July 2018

In summary then, many employees are now well ahead of the game! Learning, for them, is something that happens as part of everyday work, when they need it, as well as a way to keep themselves up-to-date with new knowledge and skills in order to remain marketable and employable. So, consequently, they are not enthused by so-called “learning solutions” that are forced upon them,  which don’t fit well with the way they now work and learn. Hence, there is currently a jarring disconnect between these two views of workplace learning in many organisations.

Next MWL Workshop

Performance Improvement Consulting

Workshop runs 16 July – 12 August 2018

Individuals and teams often face performance problems. Instead of reaching for a training solution, you need to (work with a manager to) carry out a Performance Analysis to diagnose the (actual) problem, identify the best solution(s) – which may or may not be training. You will  then need to help to implement the solution and measure the performance change (rather than any learning).
