You can purchase access to the full resource <a href=\"http:\/\/modernworkplacelearning.com\/cild\/sign-up\/\">HERE<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/modernworkplacelearning.com\/cild\/mwl\/about\/\">&lt;&lt; 1 &#8211; INTRODUCTION TO MODERN WORKPLACE LEARNING<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/modernworkplacelearning.com\/cild\/mwl\/how-are-organisations-supporting-the-4-ds-of-learning\/\">&lt; How organisations are supporting the 4 D&#8217;s of Learning<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>It is clear there is a big mismatch between how individuals acquire new knowledge and skills and what they value (<strong>discovery<\/strong>, <strong>discourse<\/strong> and <strong>doing<\/strong>), and what organisations focus on and value (<strong>didactics<\/strong>).\u00a0Modern Workplace Learning (MWL) is therefore an approach that aims to bridge that gap. \u00a0However, it\u00a0does\u00a0require a new learning mindset that views learning at work very differently.It requires a much broader understanding of the term &#8220;learning&#8221;. Here are 3 general principles of Modern Workplace Learning.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1 &#8211; MWL is more than modern training<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Whilst some training will be required in the workplace, this does need to be done in more appealing ways for modern employees, however, it is far more important to ensure that if training is provided, it is the most appropriate solution to a problem, and then, and only then, ensure it is offered to the individuals concerned in a format that is relevant and meaningful for them.\u00a0It will also need to be\u00a0performance-focused and its success measured in terms of defined performance outcomes.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"Body\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Many people think that modern training is about digitising training <\/span><span lang=\"DE\">\u2013 <\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">i.e. putting everything online. That can be part of it, of course, but it is <span class=\"None\"><b>not<\/b><\/span><\/span> <span class=\"None\"><b><span lang=\"EN-US\">just<\/span><\/b><\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\"> about digitisation.<\/span><span lang=\"DE\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">Modern training is not about automating or replicating the non-digital approach but innovating, i.e. doing things differently by taking advantage of the new opportunities afforded by the technology.<\/span><span lang=\"DE\">\u00a0<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">his means not just turning a classroom training event into a similar live virtual event or an online course, but thinking about how it can be offered in more relevant and meaningful.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>But MWL is not\u00a0<strong><em>just<\/em><\/strong> about ensuring competence, compliance and conformance but enabling and supporting individuals to learn in different ways and for many different reasons<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\"> &#8211; e.g. to solve performance problems, equip themselves with the knowledge and skills for the future, to keep up to date, or for inspiration.\u00a0<\/span>In other words, it Is not just about designing, delivering and managing stuff for people to learn from , but to help them do more for themselves, and in particular<span style=\"font-size: 1rem;\">\u00a0to help them become more aware of what they have learned in informal situations at work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>However, modern training methods might be useful to promote and stimulate some of the other ways of learning in the organisation, e.g. to encourage self-learning and self-development, or to help workers get more out of their daily work..<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a02 &#8211; MWL is about continuous incremental learning<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>An important\u00a0aspect of MWL is building and supporting continuous learning in the organisation.\u00a0When it comes to continuous learning it\u2019s also important to remember the difference between providing continuous training and supporting continuous learning.<\/p>\n<p>Here are 5 features of a training course or educational event.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>It is a\u00a0<b>one-off block of learning<\/b>. It is\u00a0generally measured in hours, days weeks or, months, and has a start and end date, e.g. a training day or a 3-month online course or programme. It happens in a\u00a0<b>defined place or space<\/b>,\u00a0for instance in a classroom or training room, or an online course or in a virtual training event.<\/li>\n<li>It is\u00a0<b>instructional<\/b>. The content has been designed in a logical sequence so that it takes the learner through the material in an organised way. starting with the fundamentals and then building upon that, It tends to provide a <b>complete<\/b> and\u00a0<b>comprehensive <\/b>coverage of a topic (at least at the required level).<\/li>\n<li>Working through the \u201cblock of learning\u201d may be a purely\u00a0<b>passive<\/b>\u00a0experience for an individual (e.g. listening to broadcast information or clicking through a series of slides of an online course), although there might be some\u00a0<b>interactive <\/b>elements\u00a0e.g. carrying out online activities, or working with others on collaborative tasks.<\/li>\n<li>It often concludes with a\u00a0<b>test<\/b>\u00a0of learning comprehension.<\/li>\n<li>The learning process is usually\u00a0<b>managed<\/b>\u00a0by an instructor or even a system (LMS) \u00a0that tracks and monitors that the individual has completed the block of learning and passed any required tests. The learning process is often (but not always)\u00a0<b>supported<\/b>\u00a0by someone to help the learner understand the content.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Once the block of learning is over, however, that\u2019s pretty much it, it\u2019s a one-and-done experience. So in a \u201ccontinuous training\u201d view of the world, \u00a0an individual then moves onto another next block of instruction either to acquire more knowledge on the same or to receive some instruction on a different topic. But continuous learning is different as we can see when we compare it below.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>It is an\u00a0<b>ongoing<\/b>\u00a0process of learning. It is not measured by the amount of time it takes. It has no start or end date because learning never ends. It happens\u00a0<b>little-by-little, day-by-day<\/b>, and knowledge and experience builds up over time.<\/li>\n<li>It happens <strong>i<\/strong><b>n all settings<\/b> as people do their jobs, browse on the Web, carry out their daily lives, and interact with their friends, family, colleagues and other contacts.<\/li>\n<li>Although incremental learning can happen by chance (as a by product of doing something else) an individual also\u00a0<b>proactively<\/b>\u00a0seeks out relevant activities and experiences to help them learn. Although these may be complete in and of themselves, an individual has to <b>actively<\/b> make the connection with what he\/she already knows in order to learn from it, it\u2019s not just about doing lots of things!<\/li>\n<li>Success is\u00a0<b>measured <\/b>in different ways, e.g. (in the short term) through improved job performance and (in the longer term) through career progression.<\/li>\n<li>The individual\u00a0<b>manages<\/b>\u00a0their own continuous learning. It\u2019s a personal or professional decision and choice about what is to be learned and how it is best achieved. Generally, there is little or no <b>support\u00a0<\/b>for this type of learning, the individual is entirely on their own.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Whilst organisations do need to offer a range of continuous learning opportunities, this involves much more than just implementing an online course library, as <a class=\"external external_icon\" href=\"http:\/\/www.trainingjournal.com\/articles\/features\/evolving-learning-strategies-keep-pace-modern-workforce\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow noreferrer\">Shelley Osborne<\/a> explains.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s time for L&amp;D and HR professionals to promote the value of continuous learning and move their teams away from the static programs that helped to breed the bad reputation of corporate training.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So a continuous learning environment is not a platform but a workplace where everyone is\u00a0<strong>constantly<\/strong> <strong>acquiring new knowledge and skills\u00a0<\/strong>in many different ways \u2013 \u00a0both planned and unplanned, formal and informal, at work and outside work.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3 &#8211; MWL is an integral part of working<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Learning is not a separate activity from work but one that happens in the workflow and as a result of work. We have seen that a large percentage of what an individual learns at work, happens informally, continuously,\u00a0in the flow of work\u00a0as people do their jobs. \u00a0\u00a0In other words, it means that informal learning is not something to be designed and managed, but rather is something that needs to be supported and enhanced as it occurs\u00a0naturally at work \u2013 in order to help people learn to do their jobs (better).
