Here&#8217;s one of my tweets:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">&#8220;Eventually \u201call learning is going to happen digitally\u201d, according to Jeff Maggioncalda, the chief executive of online learning platform Coursera.\u201d &lt;Oh dear! I think he means \u201call education&#8221;. We learn in so many other ways than through digital courses.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Jane Hart (@C4LPT) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/C4LPT\/status\/1018772834338959360?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 16, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve also held issue with the use of the word &#8220;learning&#8221; to describe something that can be designed or managed:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">You can\u2019t design, create, deliver or manage learning!. Learning is NOT a product. So let\u2019s use more appropriate words to describe what is being designed\/ created\/ delivered\/ managed, etc &#8211; e.g. content, training, activities, experiences.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Jane Hart (@C4LPT) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/C4LPT\/status\/1011643314628677639?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 26, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1688 alignright\" src=\"http:\/\/modernworkplacelearning.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/hand-813525_640-300x212.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"212\" srcset=\"http:\/\/modernworkplacelearning.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/hand-813525_640-300x212.jpg 300w, http:\/\/modernworkplacelearning.com\/magazine\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/hand-813525_640.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The problem is all the while we think &#8220;learning = education or training or courses&#8221;, it follows that &#8220;learning technologies = tools to design, deliver and manage education, training or courses&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>So, when the focus for all &#8220;learning&#8221; in the workplace is what exists and is managed in a stand-alone LMS (or Learning Platform), then this sends out the wrong message to the people in an organisation &#8211; i.e. that &#8220;workplace learning&#8221; is only about what has been organised for them by the L&amp;D department &#8211; which is clearly not the case.<\/p>\n<p>Most learning happens in the workplace outside of any course or e-learning. It happens through exposure, experience, practice, reflection and so on &#8211; in planned, unplanned and serendipitous ways &#8211;\u00a0 in the flow of work, as people do their daily jobs. This doesn&#8217;t involve studying or being trained, but people learn nonetheless, and this way of learning is just as valuable, if not <span style=\"color: #993366;\"><a style=\"color: #993366;\" href=\"http:\/\/modernworkplacelearning.com\/magazine\/classroom-training-and-e-learning-are-the-least-valued-ways-of-learning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>more so than formal courses<\/strong><\/a><\/span>. And, of course, the plain fact is, a LMS (or learning platform) just can&#8217;t support this way of learning.<\/p>\n<p>I know that many people in L&amp;D do understand all this, it&#8217;s more often than not, that their people don\u2019t. &#8220;Learning = training&#8221; is a mindset that has been entrenched for a very long time, so that managers still just want to order up e-learning to solve problems, and individuals just think taking courses is the only way for them to acquire knowledge or new skills.<\/p>\n<p>So, how do you develop a new organisational learning mindset and culture?\u00a0 Do you sit people in a classroom or make them take an e-learning course\u00a0(which you host in your LMS) on how the real learning takes place in the workplace??!!<\/p>\n<p>The great scientist and inventor Buckminster \u201cBucky\u201d Fuller has the answer:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;If you want to teach people a new way of thinking, don\u2019t bother trying to teach them. Instead, give them a tool, the use of which will lead to new ways of thinking.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So the answer, then, is to make use of your own enterprise collaboration platform &#8211; the one that is used for work &#8211; so that people can\u00a0<strong>see <\/strong>how\u00a0learning is an integral part of their daily work and how they are learning from their daily work.<\/p>\n<p>The latest team collaboration tools, like <span style=\"color: #993366;\"><a style=\"color: #993366;\" href=\"https:\/\/slack.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Slack<\/strong><\/a><\/span>, that support team working are ideal for this. They are used by group <strong>to do<\/strong> their work (unlike enterprise social networks which have often been seen as add-ons to work).<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Slack channels gather people from across the organization, allowing coworkers to get to know each other better and build the kind of trust and rapport that leads to frequent collaboration.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>And, when it comes to how L&amp;D can make use of them, there&#8217;s no better time and place to get started than by <span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #993366;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/90201350\/how-to-use-slack-to-onboard-new-hires\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">using Slack for onboarding<\/a>.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>So, this begs the question, do you still need an LMS?\u00a0 I&#8217;ve left my own thoughts <span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong><a style=\"color: #993366;\" href=\"http:\/\/modernworkplacelearning.com\/magazine\/whats-the-point-of-a-lms\/\">here<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/corporate-learning-straight-answers-big-questions-shackleton-jones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\">Nick Shackleton-Jones<\/span><\/a> <\/strong>agrees.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;Probably, yes &#8211; but not for learning. An LMS is still a decent tool for event management and tracking regulatory compliance (for example using elearning modules) &#8211; but you should consider it to be largely independent from your (real) learning systems.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>But if you are not ready to let go of your LMS completely, that&#8217;s fine, the good thing about Slack is that it supports <a href=\"https:\/\/slack.com\/apps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #993366;\"><strong>apps and integrations<\/strong><\/span><\/a> with a wide range of tools and platforms,\u00a0which means that you can integrate all your learning activities and resources right inside the workspace. (Integrations with Twitter, Nuzzel, RSS, Anders Pink when that you can automate the delivery of new and interesting content on a regularly basis, and integrations with platforms like Google Docs and even your LMS, mean you can still continue to make use of them to track the regulatory and compliance stuff.
